The Dialect You Set Is the One Customers Hear

A customer in Baghdad writes the way they speak. Short, specific, a time of day said the way the city says it. The answer that comes back is polite, complete, and from somewhere else. The grammar is fine. The company sounds like it is visiting. Then a voice note arrives in a third tone, and a follow-up message the next morning is in a fourth, because that one was written by a rule someone drafted in formal Arabic on a quiet Sunday. The customer is not collecting samples of your language settings. They are deciding whether this is one desk or four tools that have never met.

Dialect is not a greeting at the top of the chat. It is the voice of every sentence the project is allowed to produce. If you serve Baghdad, the reply, the voice note, the line a colleague asks the assistant to draft, and the message an automation writes should all be that Baghdad. If you serve Riyadh, they should be that. A project that changes accent because the last sentence was in English, or because a different button was pressed, feels unreliable even when the facts are right.

A language switch is not a dialect

Most products treat Arabic as one bucket. Arabic in, Arabic out. That is enough for a document that nobody has to hear. It is not enough for a person who asked "شلون أحجز باچر العصر" and received an answer that could have been printed in a textbook. They understood it. They also heard the distance. On a phone call the distance is immediate. In a chat it takes two messages. In a voice note it is the whole product, because the customer hears the accent, not the setting screen you configured.

Iraqi, Gulf, Levantine, Egyptian, Maghrebi, and the English or Kurdish you actually serve are not skins on the same sentence. People name the same intent with different words, and they hear formality differently. A clinic that says حضرتك and a delivery desk that says هسة are both being precise. A bot that mixes them at random is not being friendly. It is being unmanned. The choice belongs on the project, once, where the team can see it, not inside each reply as a guess.

Set it once, and keep it on every path

In the project settings you pick the language and the dialect. Iraqi, including the Baghdadi accent when that is the city you serve. Gulf. Levantine. English, with the variety you mean. Kurdish, Sorani or Kurmanji, when that is the line. From then on that pair is the rule for the replies the project generates.

A customer can still write in English on an Iraqi project. People do this for product names, for a sentence they pasted, for a habit. The answer comes back in the dialect you set. The project does not switch because the last line was in another language. Switching is what makes a support account sound like it is improvising. Matching the caller is a different product decision, and it has its own switch, described below. A locked project stays locked.

The same rule reaches the places teams usually forget, because those places are not "the chatbot." A WhatsApp voice note is turned into text, answered, and sent back as a voice note in that dialect. The customer never had to type, and they still hear one company. On the desk, when a person asks Mujib to draft a reply, the draft uses the project dialect. Sending it is a separate act. A suggestion sitting in front of an agent is not a message, but it should already sound like the message they would have written, or they will rewrite it every time and the setting was theater.

Automations are the path that drifts most often, because the sentence was written earlier, by someone else, in a tone that felt "safe." When a step asks the AI to write the line, that line follows the project dialect too. A reminder at 9 in the morning should not sound like a different firm from the chat at 4. If you wrote the sentence yourself, word for word, it stays your sentence. The dialect rule governs what the assistant generates. It does not secretly translate a text you locked.

The dialect is a project rule. It is not a guess the model is invited to remake on every message, every note, and every draft.

Some projects really do answer in more than one language

A hotel in Erbil, a carrier with Arabic and Kurdish lines, a desk that serves Iraqis and expatriates in the same inbox: these are not broken if they answer in more than one language. They are broken if they do it by accident. When you turn multi-language on, Mujib follows the language the customer is using. A caller who stays in Kurdish is not dragged into Arabic because the welcome was Arabic. A caller who stays in Arabic is not answered in English because they typed a brand name.

The dangerous middle is a project that looks locked and behaves loose, or the reverse. If the setting says Iraqi and the replies wander into formal Arabic whenever the question is long, the setting is a label. If the setting says the project follows the customer and every reply is forced into one dialect, you have blocked the second language you promised the other half of your customers. Read the setting and then send two test messages, one in the language you serve and one in a language you do not. The pair of answers tells you which product you actually turned on.

Voice agents should not be a second, forgotten choice

A phone line is where accent is hardest to hide, and it is also where teams most often leave a default they never opened. A new voice agent that you do not give its own language inherits the project. The line and the chat start from the same decision. You can still give one agent its own language when the line really is different: a Kurdish number beside an Arabic one, an English line for a hotel's international desk. That is a choice you make because the line is different, not because the form had an empty box and the empty box meant something else.

The words the agent is allowed to say still come from your knowledge and from the tools. Dialect does not give it permission to invent a booking, a balance, or a year. It changes how a true answer is spoken. A correct installation window said in a voice the city recognizes is the product. The same window said in a borrowed accent is a correct answer people hang up on.

The welcome is yours, and that is deliberate

If you wrote the welcome sentence yourself, Mujib leaves it. Changing the dialect does not quietly replace a line you typed. A suggested greeting is offered when the welcome is empty, so a new project is not blank. The moment you replace that suggestion with your own words, those words stay. This surprises people who expected every string on the project to track the dialect automatically. It is the safer surprise. A welcome is the one sentence customers see before they have asked anything, and many desks have spent real time on it. Wiping it because a dropdown moved would be a different kind of carelessness.

So check it. If the replies are in Baghdadi and the welcome is still a formal line from an old template, edit the welcome. That mismatch is visible in the first second, before any of the careful rules have a chance to speak. The rest of the project can be right and the hello can still undo it.

How to know the setting is actually on

Open the project and read the language and the dialect out loud. Then do four small tests, because four paths are how the voice leaks. Send a chat message in English and read the reply. Send a WhatsApp voice note and listen to what comes back. On the desk, ask for a draft and read it before anyone presses send. Trigger a try on an automation that writes with AI, and read the held text. You are not looking for cleverness. You are looking for one accent, four times.

If one of the four wanders, that path is the bug, not the customer. Fix the setting or the sentence you typed. Do not add a paragraph to the prompt that says "be more local" and hope the next channel picks it up. A rule that lives in one box and not in the others is how you got four voices in the first place.

Pick the dialect the city already uses, and then make every path obey it.

Chat, voice note, desk draft, automation. If those four sound like the same desk, the setting is real. If they do not, the customer will notice before you do.
